Custom Jiko Shiki LED License Plates: How They're Built and How to Order
The jiko shiki is one of the rarest license plates in Japanese car culture. Most people in the JDM scene have never seen one in person. The ones that do surface are used, yellowed, usually missing mounting hardware, and go for well over $300 — with no say in the prefecture, the hiragana, or the number. You get what you get.
Code Red Performance builds them from scratch. Fully illuminated, fully customizable, dimensionally identical to a genuine Japanese jiko shiki plate.
How They're Built
Each plate is a multi-layer acrylic assembly. From back to front: an opaque white base layer with an embedded LED channel and strip, a frosted white diffusion layer for even light spread, a semi-transparent gloss green layer, and a final opaque white face layer. The whole assembly is painted satin white. When your order comes in, the face layer is CNC routed to your exact specifications — cutting through to the green layer beneath. That's what lights up.
No external light frame required. No additional parts. The LED strip is built into the plate itself.
How to Customize Yours
There are four customization options:
Prefecture
Over 100 Japanese prefectures to choose from. If yours isn't listed, reach out and we'll add it.
Vehicle Class Number
One to three digits. The 300 series covers most standard passenger vehicles. The 500 series covers kei and compact cars. Single-digit class numbers are the rarest — historically found on older registered vehicles. You can run anything from a traditional 300 or 501 to something personal. 900 combinations available.
Hiragana
Over 40 characters available, including the "Y" character commonly found on plates registered to US military members in Japan.
Plate Number
Up to 6 alphanumeric characters. Lower case, upper case, numbers, placeholder dots (•), or dashes. Type exactly what you want — this is what gets cut.
Installation
Mount the plate to your vehicle. Connect the power wire to any 12V source and the ground wire to chassis ground. Arrives fully assembled.
